The Atlanta Technical College Foundation Hosts Annual Bridge Builder Awards to Honors Top Corporate Citizens and Raise Funds for Scholarships
Billye Aaron, makes a surprise donation of $208,000 to the college on behalf of the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream the Foundation
On Wednesday, April 17, the Atlanta Technical College Foundation (ATCF) recognized four influential members of the Atlanta business community for their work to connect citizens of the region to resources that will enhance individual and collective quality of life. Billye Aaron, The Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation; The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, Inc . (AMBFF), Penny McPhee, President, accepting on behalf of the AMBFF; John Deushane, The Networks of Channel 11; and Joe Reinkemeyer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, were named “Bridge Builders” during the 12th Annual Bridge Builder Awards.
Atlanta Technical College President Alvetta Peterman Thomas shared, “As Bridge Builders, all four of these individuals, and the organizations that they represent, have made extraordinary and necessary connections between their work and the Atlanta community, and in doing so, they have positively and progressively impacted the quality of life for the citizens of Atlanta. We are honored to recognize their hard work and dedication.”
Held at the Foundry at Puritan Mill, the event generated more than $100,000 in sponsorship’s and ticket sales that will be used to support student and faculty scholarships and programs at Atlanta Technical College. In addition, 2013 Bridge Builder honoree, Billye Aaron, made a surprise donation of $208,000 to the college on behalf of the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream the Foundation. Cherly Lomax of Bank of America followed with the presentation of a $200,000 check on behalf of the Bank of America Neighborhood Builders Grant.
The theme for the 2013 Bridge Builder Awards was Kaleidoscope. Thomas shared the inspiration behind the theme stating, “The kaleidoscope is an appropriate metaphor for the campus of Atlanta Technical College. Every time the kaleidoscope shifts, the image changes. The kaleidoscope represents thousands of possibilities, myriad arrangements, and the charm and magic of being able to change perspective with the simple twist of the wrist. Atlanta Technical College is where the beautiful, diverse pieces within the kaleidoscope form the perfect image—a foreseeable future where possibilities become real.”
Atlanta Technical College was named the 2012 College of the Year for the state of Georgia. In their acceptance speeches, each Bridge Builder praised the College for providing local citizens with viable options for gainful employment. Guests at the event also heard testimonials from students and faculty who shared how critical ATCF funding is to making a college education accessible to Georgians.
The ATCF has hosted the Bridge Builder Awards since 2001. Former honorees have included: Ann Cramer, IBM; Ingrid Saunders Jones, The Coca-Cola Company; Dr. Julie Gerberding , The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Curley Dossman, Georgia-Pacific Foundation; Tad Hutcheson, Delta Airlines and Jackie Parker, Newell Rubbermaid.
