Commercial Wiring

Program Overview

The Commercial Wiring Technical Certificate of Credit provides instruction to enhance students\' knowledge and skills necessary to perform wiring functions in a commercial setting. Topics include safety practices, blueprint & schematic reading and interpretation along with wiring procedures and practices.

Minimum Program Length: 1 Semester

Entrance Requirements

Admissions Requirements
  • Must be 16 years of age.
  • Completion of high school or GED and submission of official transcript required to apply.
  • Achievement of minimum program admission scores in Reading, English, and Math.
  • Transfer of previous post secondary credits will be determined by the registrar.

Student Performance/Graduation Requirements: Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and complete all required courses to graduate.

Introduces electrical symbols and their use in construction blueprints, electrical schematics, and diagrams. Topics include: electrical symbols, component identification, print reading and scales and measurement.

This course introduces commercial wiring practices and procedures. Topics include: industrial safety procedures, the National Electrical Code, Principles of Grounding and Bonding, Commercial Services, three-phase power systems, and Electric Motor Fundamentals.


This course is a continuation of the study in commercial wiring practices and procedures. Topics include: conduit installation and system design concepts.

Introduces the theory and application of varying sine wave voltages and current. Topics include: magnetism, AC wave generation, AC test equipment, inductance, capacitance, and basic transformers.
Provides an in-depth study of the health and safety practices required for maintenance of industrial, commercial, and home electrically operated equipment. Topics include: introduction to OSHA regulations; safety tools, equipment, and procedures; and first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Introduces direct current (DC) concepts and applications. Topics include: electrical principles and laws; batteries; DC test equipment; series, parallel, and simple combination circuits; and laboratory procedures and safety practices.
