Atlanta Technical College has implemented a Healthy Campus Initiative that focuses on exercise, nutrition, disease awareness, illness prevention, and physical and mental health. As part of the initiative, culinary arts students planted an herb garden in the student courtyard and incorporated harvested items into healthy recipes. Atlanta Tech employees initiated campus walking clubs and launched “Healthy Wednesdays,” a weekly gathering during which members of the Financial Aid department and the Business Office prepare healthy lunches for their co-workers. In addition, the Economic Development Office organizes an annual Health & Wellness Expo during which members of the community can participate in health screenings, wellness workshops and fitness demonstrations. This year’s expo is slated for February 23.
To launch this year’s Healthy Campus Initiative, the college implemented a campus-wide no-smoking policy and provided students and faculty with smoking cessation information. The Human Resources department and faculty from the Allied Health programs also provided employees with onsite biometric screenings, immunizations and programs focusing on wellness. All resources, including social media sites, electronic signage and the intranet, are used to advance healthy habits among employees and students. Health tips are shared with the entire community via these outlets. Atlanta Technical College is committed to promoting healthy lifestyles and will expand the scope of the Healthy Campus Initiative by challenging each student organization on campus to incorporate wellness activities into their 2012-2013 calendars of events.
