Why am I unable to access GALILEO when off campus?
There can be various reasons why someone may not be able to access GALILEO. First, you should verify that you are a currently enrolled student or faculty/staff member of Atlanta Technical College. If you fall into one of these categories you are eligible to use GALILEO when off campus. Be sure to have the most current password. Be sure that your computer accepts cookies and does not contain any firewalls that could prevent GALILEO from opening.

Try clearing the disk cache (Netscape) or deleting temporary internet files (Internet Explorer) in your web browser. Additionally, many databases require that you set your browser to accept cookies. If you are having problems with a particular database, please be sure to use the Submit a Comment form that is available from GALILEO. If there seems to be problems with many of the GALILEO databases you may want to call the reference desk and ask that the incident be reported to the GALILEO help desk.

What is a firewall? How might it prevent me from accessing GALILEO when off campus?
A firewall is a system or group of systems that enforces an access control policy between two networks. The actual means by which this is accomplished varies widely, but in principle, the firewall can be thought of as a pair of mechanisms: one which exists to block traffic, and the other which exists to permit traffic. Many corporations use firewalls to protect sensitive information from hackers, etc.

A firewall might prevent an off campus user from accessing GALILEO if the GALILEO site is being blocked by the firewall. Users should check with their systems administration person to determine if this is the case.
